Swim Lessons at Salem and Londonderry

Our team of enthusiastic and dedicated swim instructors adhere to the standards of excellence set by the American Red Cross “learn to swim program”. The program is specifically designed for anyone who is at least 6 months of age through adulthood.

You can expect that this swim program will focus on the needs of each swimmer and provide the opportunity to master the concepts of particular skills and progress at a comfortable pace through each swim level prior to moving on to the next level. Every swimmer will become familiar with safety in or around the water, as well as learn the 4 competitive swimming strokes by following a systematic approach and progression of swim levels.

Swim Lesson Program Levels

We will gladly assess your child so that they are placed in the correct level.

Please note: Swim Level Descriptions have been revised to reflect the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program standards.

Parent & Child: (6months – 2.5 years) 30 Minute Class
Introduces basic skills to parents and children. Parents learn how to safely work with their child
in the water, including how to appropriately support them and how to prepare and encourage them to
participate fully in the class. Caregiver accompanies child in the water. (Swim Diapers required)

Readiness: (2.5 – through 3 years) 30 Minute Class
This class is for children who have taken a Parent & Child class and are ready to progress their
skills to the next level. Children are afforded more freedom to participate in the class without being
held, but still within arm’s reach of their caregiver. Emphasis on buoyancy, breath control, kicking,
scooping and gaining more confidence while still having fun!

Preschool 1: (4 – 5-year-olds) 30 Minute Class
This class introduces basic aquatic skills that children continue to build upon as they progress
through the levels of Preschool Aquatics and The Learn-to-Swim Program. In addition, children start to
develop a positive attitude and safe practices around the water. This class is designed for children who
may feel nervous or may have not had much experience in the water. Swimmers are given as much
support as they need for all skills.

Preschool 2: (4 – 5-year-olds) 30 Minute Class
Preschool 2 further develops basic aquatic skills. Swimmers begin to perform some skills at a
slightly more advanced level. (i.e., with less and less support) Swimmers will continue to use
simultaneous, as well as alternating, arm and leg movements on the front and back in order to gain
more proficiency in preparation for learning formal strokes. Children should be fairly comfortable in the
water for this class. They should have good listening skills and work well in a group setting. They will be
given as much support as they need for all skills.

Preschool 3 (4-5-year-olds) 30 Minute Class
Preschool 3 increases swimmers’ proficiency in performing previously learned skills. Ideally
children will have completed a preschool 2 class or would be evaluated by an instructor before entering
this class. In this class, swimmers improve their coordination and control of simultaneous arm and leg
action and alternating arm and leg action. Children in this level will start to gain the confidence to be
able to swim on their own, without any support. *Prerequisites: Completion of Preschool 2 with
instructor approval to advance or swim evaluation

Learn-to-Swim Program

Youth Level 1 – Intro to Water Skills (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
This class introduces basic aquatic skills that participants will continue to build on as they
progress through the Learn-to-Swim Program. In addition, swimmers start to develop positive attitudes,
effective swimming techniques and safe practices in and around the water. The skills taught in this class
overlap with Preschool levels 1 & 2, but are for kids who are at least 6 years old. This class is not
necessarily a progression after Preschool 3.

Youth Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
This class teaches the beginnings of locomotion skills needed to produce forward motion in the
water. Many of the skills taught in this class mirror those taught in a Preschool 3 class, but is for kids
who are at least 6 years old. Swimmers will learn to glide and float without support and recover to a
vertical position. Participants further develop simultaneous as well as, alternating arm and leg
movements on the front and back. The beginnings of how to swim the proper strokes.

Youth Level 3 – Stroke Development (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
In this class, swimmers learn and practice survival floating, front crawl, and elementary
backstroke. They will be introduced to both scissor and dolphin kicks, headfirst entries from a seated
position and tread water for an extended period. *Prerequisites: Completion of a Youth Level 2 swim
class with instructor approval to advance or swim evaluation.

Youth Level 4 – Stroke Improvement (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
In this class swimmers will learn further improvement of their strokes and increase their
endurance by swimming further distances. Participants will add arm actions to the previously learned
scissor kick and breaststroke kick in order to learn how to perform sidestroke and breaststroke with
proper technique. Swimmers also begin to learn back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of
performing an open turn at the wall. *Prerequisites: Completion of Youth Level 3 with instructor
approval to advance or swim evaluation.

Youth Level 5 – Stroke Refinement (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
In this level, swimmers refine their performance of all six strokes (Butterfly, backstroke,
breaststroke, freestyle, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their endurance by
swimming multiple lengths of the pool at a time. Swimmers will also learn how to perform a flip turn.
*Prerequisites: Completion of Youth Level 4 class with instructor approval to advance or swim
evaluation.

Youth Level 6 – Pre-team (Ages 6+) 45 Minute Class
This class in for both the competitive and non-competitive swimmer. Swimmers will build
endurance, further develop and refine strokes and prepare for team swimming. All strokes are covered
as well as starts and turns. The goal is to develop strength and endurance, as well as proficiency, to the
maximum ability of a swimmer. *Prerequisites: Completion of Youth Level 5 with instructor approval to
advance or swim evaluation.

Swim Lesson Schedules and Registration 

 

Hello Swim families,

Our Spring 2 Swim Lesson Schedule is now available.  We will be adding more classes as these ones fill up, so please be sure to get on a waitlist if you don’t see a class that will work with your schedule.  We will use the waitlists to notify you if more spots open up, or if new classes are added in a swim level that you are waiting for.  Please use the swim level descriptions above to determine which level would best suit your swimmer or schedule a swim evaluation with us if you are not sure.  The session will run for six weeks starting on Sunday May 1st.  There will be no swim lessons on Memorial Day, therefore the last day of the session will be June 13th.

We will be using a text messaging service to notify you of any class cancellations that may arise due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather including thunderstorms, scheduling conflicts, instructor availability or any problems with the pool that may force us to close. This is the only method we will be using to notify you of cancellations so be sure to sign up! There are instructions for this on the swim lesson schedule. Signing up is easy.  Just text this message: @wcwcsalem to the number 81010 to receive notifications regarding swim lessons and pool closures at the Salem Club. For updates regarding swim lessons and pool closures for the Londonderry pool text the message @wcwcswimLD to the number 81010. Complete the additional steps to complete your sign up. After you have sent the message correctly you may be asked to enter your name and date of birth. (Text messages may only be sent to individuals who are age 13+ so enter your birthday, not your child’s) If you have signed up in the past you may only receive a confirmation text.

RAYS Swim Team

Rockingham Area Youth Swim Team is a year round competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. We offer training and instruction for swimmers ages 5 thru 20, giving each member the opportunity to improve swimming skills, achieve individual goals, and promote team unity. We are committed to helping swimmers grow in character, physical development and skills. In addition, we believe that families are an intricate and important part of the success of the swimmer and the team as a whole. If your son or daughter is interested in competitive swimming and interested in tryouts please let us know as our team is rapidly growing.

The Summer program dates: May – first weekend in August.

Minimum Swim Capability Requirements:

8yo and below: Must be able to swim 25yds Freestyle and Backstroke
9-12yo: Must be able to swim 25yds Freestyle and Backstroke
12yo and older: Must be able to swim 100yds all basic strokes
